A curated collection
of rare encounters.

Not a catalogue of activities. Seven people and places Ambassador brings its guests to — a master at the frame, a family at the table, a collection open to a conversation. In each of them you do something with your own hands, and something stays with you after.

Every encounter is arranged individually and confirmed in conversation — with the master first, then with you.

The workshop is a working one. The carpet on the loom when you arrive will still be there long after you leave.

Akbar Rakhimov

A ceramic master from a family of ceramic masters. Geology and archaeology gave him a different way of understanding clay, minerals and pigments — as rock, as strata, as something with a history before the wheel.

His studio is in Tashkent — the one encounter of the seven that needs no journey to reach.

The encounter

  1. iYou meet the master in his studio, among the vessels of four generations.
  2. iiHe talks about clay as a geologist would — where it comes from, what the minerals do in the fire.
  3. iiiThe clay is prepared; you sit at the wheel with him.
  4. ivA vessel shaped by your own hands, with his hands correcting yours.
  5. vTea in the studio while the piece begins to dry.

What stays with you: the vessel you turned. It needs time to dry and be fired; how it reaches you is agreed in conversation.

Abdulvakhid Bukhori

He is bringing back the blue ceramics of eighteenth-century Bukhara — a colour and a manner that had almost gone. Museum research, archaeology and restoration meet in his workshop with the kiln.

The conversation here is as much about what was lost as about what is being made.

You are put to work. 07 · Tashkent · A visit built as a conversation07 · Ташкент · Визит как разговор

Centre of Islamic Civilisation

The new centre in Tashkent gathers the scholarship, manuscripts and art of the region's Islamic centuries under one roof, beside the Hazrati Imam ensemble.

We do not bring guests here for a route through the halls. We bring them for a conversation with a person who knows the collection — and build the visit around it.

The encounter

  1. iYou are met at the centre by the person who will walk with you.
  2. iiThe story first: why this collection, why here, what it took to bring it together.
  3. iiiThe visit is shaped around what you care about — manuscripts, astronomy, architecture, the people behind them.
  4. ivTime in front of the pieces that matter, not the whole building at once.
  5. vTea after, and the questions that only come once you have seen it.

How the collection is kept

Three questions we ask of every encounter before it appears on this page.

To whom, or where?

A named person or a specific place — not a craft in general, not a city in general.

What kind of access?

What happens in the encounter that does not happen for a visitor with a ticket. If we cannot answer, we do not promise it.

What stays after?

Something made by your own hands, or a photograph of it, or an understanding you did not have before.

ExperiencesExperiences

There are more doors than one page can hold.

Some are not found on a map.
We open them through people we know.

The collection grows as encounters are confirmed — a woodcarver in Khiva, a bathhouse in Bukhara, Samarkand after the last visitor has left. Tell us what you would like to live through; the days around it are our part of the work.
